Bon Volks Studio is a member-run creative workspace in Margate for independent sole traders, freelancers and artists. Its purpose is to provide high-quality, affordable studios and workplace stability while giving members a meaningful role in shaping the organisation. Rather than a conventional landlord-and-tenant arrangement, members help administer the space and take on small caretaker or administrative responsibilities, creating a strong sense of shared ownership and community. The workspace combines an upstairs coworking office with 11 desks for predominantly desk-based work and five private studios designed as bright, quiet spaces for creative practice. There is also a project space for member-led photoshoots, exhibitions and book launches, alongside member-built specialist resources including a carpenter’s workshop, photography darkroom and recording sound booth. High-speed internet, central heating, secure access, a lounge and kitchen support day-to-day work. Membership includes 24-hour studio access, CCTV and secure entry, and the premises are dog friendly. The atmosphere is practical, collaborative and community-minded, with a mix of disciplines represented among the members, from artists, photographers and designers to writers, musicians, makers and campaigners. Shared care of the building is part of the experience, helping the studio feel more like a working creative community than a standard serviced office. Bon Volks also extends its creative ethos beyond the workspace through exhibitions, workshops, residencies, environmental projects and neighbourhood activities. Its residency programme supports visiting artists, writers and designers, while events and open-studio activity invite the wider Margate community in. It is particularly suited to people seeking affordable studio or coworking space and who are happy to contribute to a member-led organisation.
